Standing by the crowd, he was listening to the church leaders arguing with Jesus disciples. He had heard they like their Master could perform miracles. That is why he brought his son to them. The boy was possessed demon. Were all the stories he had heard fictitious, just fabrications? He looks up to see Jesus coming down the hill. The father goes to Jesus and says to Him, Luke 9:38–40 “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only boy, and a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at the mouth; and only with difficulty does it leave him, mauling him as it leaves. “I begged Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not.” Jesus challenged the man’s faith and then said, Luke 9:41 … “Bring your son here.” Mark 9:21–37 And He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. “It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!” And Jesus said to him, “‘If You can?’ All things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief.” When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again.” After crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and the boy became so much like a corpse that most of them said, “He is dead!” But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him; and he got up. When He came into the house, His disciples began questioning Him privately, “Why could we not drive it out?” And He said to them, “This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer.” Was the inability of the disciples to rebuke the demon because of their lack of faith or the father’s? Jesus is teaching us that prayer is the key to faith. Faith is only sustained through a daily communion with Christ. Jesus didn’t condemn the man for his lack of faith. The man knew that faith was something he himself could produce. The father knew he could ask Jesus for more faith. Jesus knew how desperately the boy’s father wanted to believe. Belief doesn’t happen by arguing within ourselves. Belief is an act of our will. Belief is choosing to activate our faith through prayer every day. We ignore our doubts. We expect our prayers to be answered. Matthew 17:20 () And He (Jesus)said to them, “Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. Do you have mountains in your life that need to be moved? Jesus declares, Mark 11:23 “Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him. We have heard of the miracles Jesus did while walking on this earth. We have heard of miracles Jesus has done and is doing today. In spite of our doubts and fears we still want to believe. We want more faith. We want to believe that a miracle is possible for us. Lord please help us not to doubt.
