When the Wrangell Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church heard that the annual health fair was resuming in Wrangell, AK they knew they wanted to be a part of it. Missy Brendible, Personal Ministries Director for the Wrangell SDA Church, said “We want to be a part of spreading the good news of good health.” The church quickly got to work planning for the event by securing a booth, rounding up volunteers, and gathering supplies and literature.
April 1, 2023, the day of the health fair, the local community center was full of volunteers and booths. There was health information from the local hospital, mental health, fire department, and local tribal resources to name a few. Many booths had creative ways to engage people including a push up challenge and a teddy bear clinic.
At the Wrangell SDA Church booth people could read about spiritual health, sign up for a quit smoking clinic, and taste a sample of some sugar free desserts. One local church member who was waiting in the registration line that morning reports, “I heard about the sugar free desserts long before I got into the booth area. People were telling each other ‘go to the booth with the sugar free brownies they are good!’”
Volunteers at the booth were able to share “taste and see the Lord is good” with not only brownies but banana bread. They connected with many people as they came through to try the goodies. The volunteers reported that the response from the community was positive. One local church member said it well, “It is events like this that allow us to connect with the community and show them what God’s love is really about. In this case that God loves us and cares about our health.”
